On Tuesday, billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott announced $640 million in donations to 361 nonprofits.
Scott, the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos and Amazon co-founder, has kept her Giving Pledge promise to contribute at least half of her income to charity.
The current batch of $1 million to $2 million grants went to nonprofits in the arts, affordable housing, education, public health, immigration, and diversity.
She wrote on her Yield Giving website that those community-led groups were "elevated by peer organizations and a round-2 evaluation panel for their outstanding work advancing the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles."
After receiving more than 6,000 applications, the groups were selected. Through "quiet research" that discovered and assessed organizations for "indicators of high potential for sustained positive impact" or through a "open call" application process, the nonprofit organizations were chosen to participate in the program.
Additionally, Scott acknowledged the assessment and implementation teams as "vital agents of change.
" Lever for Change, which was in charge of managing the open call, was also praised by Scott.
In the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Scott is ranked 41st in terms of wealth, with a total of $36.2 billion.
