A family member of César Chávez has asked RFK Jr. to stop using his image in his campaign.

The family of César Chávez asks independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to cease mentioning him on the campaign trail. “We respectfully call upon you and your campaign to cease using images of our father to associate yourself with him and suggest your campaign's goals are compatible,” Fernando Chávez, Chávez's eldest son, wrote.

He said, “It is our sincere conviction that this association is untrue and deceptive.” The letter stated that the family would “pursue all legal action available” if Kennedy did not stop using the United Farm Workers co-founder's name and imagery.

Kennedy campaign spokesperson Stefanie Spear said: “RFK Jr.’s father, Robert F. Kennedy, was a good friend of César Chávez and a staunch supporter of farmworkers throughout his life. RFK Jr. has spent almost 40 years fighting worker and consumer poisoning.

On Friday, the Chávez family officially endorsed President Joe Biden's re-election campaign before César Chávez Day. Julie Rodriguez Chavez, César Chávez's granddaughter, manages Biden's 2024 campaign.

Former Attorney General Robert Kennedy Sr. flew to California in 1968 to join Chavez following a 25-day water-only fast. Kennedy Sr., a Democratic presidential candidate, supported the farm labor movement's nonviolent tactics, including a multiyear California grape strike. His alliance with Chavez helped the Democratic Party support farmworkers' labor rights. Kennedy was killed in 1968.

Kennedy Jr.'s campaign stated his weekend Los Angeles event will “celebrate the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, a good friend of RFK and RFK, Jr.” Photo of Kennedy Sr. and Chávez on event invitation.

Kennedy discussed his family's relationship with Chavez during a National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials convention in July 2023.

Kennedy remarked, “My father's close, and probably most important political alliance, which was César Chávez, who helped him win the California primary during his last day of life and remained a very, very close friend of mine for most of my adult life.
