Dan Quinn: "Fair to envision" Commanders will choose a quarterback.

The Commanders have the second-overall pick. They traded 2023 starting quarterback Sam Howell and signed Marcus Mariota, the former Titans starter and Atlanta's starter for most of 2022.

Dan Quinn, the Commanders' new head coach, expects a quarterback from the 2024 draft.

"I would say it'd be fair to envision we'd be taking a quarterback," Quinn told NFL.com from the annual meetings on Saturday. "I think [General Manager] Adam [Peters] should answer where it will happen. We'll talk a lot in the coming weeks, so we had a fantastic trip out to see some guys.

I've liked going through this process with Adam. He knows this position, what it looks like, and where to go, so going through that process has been amazing." Naturally, Peters' last high-pick quarterback was Trey Lance. Quinn said he's not ready to vote on Commanders' actions.

"I still have a lot of work to do into that space," he remarked. Adam's too far ahead to go through everything, but we worked hard on our team and then the free-agent process

As we finalize the document, we still have more visits and people to come in, so it's taken longer. We're getting closer, but not there yet."

Quinn took over as head coach with Matt Ryan as his quarterback last time. Ryan won NFL MVP in 2015 with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

The Commanders might choose a quarterback at No. 2 or trade down. Maybe they like a lower-round choice. The last 49ers quarterback picked during Peters's tenure was the last choice. Brock Purdy is doing great.
