A former correctional guard at a federal women's prison in California, which is notorious for multiple charges of misbehavior, was sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing five inmates, according to an announcement made by federal officials on Wednesday.
According to the United States Department of Justice, Nakie Nunley received a jail sentence for sexually abusing detainees. Nunley was a correctional officer who worked at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin.
She is the seventh correctional officer to be sentenced to prison for this offense. At the prison, there was a culture of widespread sexual assault and cover-up, according to an investigation that was conducted by The Associated Press in 2022.
Nunley "egregiously exploited" his power to torture detainees and punish against any who spoke up, according to a statement released by the United States Deputy Attorney General from the United States, Lisa Monaco.
Monaco stated that the Justice Department will not allow retaliation against victims and will hold accountable officials who abuse their office to harm people they are sworn to protect.
"As today's sentencing demonstrates, the Justice Department will hold accountable those officials,” Monaco added. In the previous year, Nunley entered a guilty plea to four counts of sexual abuse of a ward as well as five lesser crimes charging him with abusive sexual intercourse with five different women.
The nation's Department of Justice stated that he also acknowledged to lying to federal investigators who were conducting an investigation into claims that were made against him.
More than 600 people are now housed within the facility, as stated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The facility is situated around 40 miles east of San Francisco.
